After winning the surf culture award at the 2015 Australian surfing awards, for best contribution to surf culture, the Byron Bay Surf Festival increased it’s reputation as the one annual event on the international surf calendar not to be missed. The Festival is a 3-day non-competitive event focusing on surf culture, highlighting creativity, innovation, environment and sustainability. It features over 25 different free and ticketed events, including; surfing, art, music, film, yoga, surfboards, design, markets, fashion, presentations, education, demo’s, literature, history, and culminating on Sunday with highly popular freestyle&stoke surf sessions at Wategos beach.

The festival opens up on Friday 24th of February at the Lone Goat Gallery with an internationally curated art show before moving up the road to Byron’s main Beach foreshore for the opening ceremony and outdoor sunset cinema, followed by live music at Byron Bay’s famous ‘Beachy’ hotel.

Saturday finds the main beach lined with the sprawling Surf Art Market; this curation of all things culturally yummy tends to lure the curiosity of people from all walks of life to explore the many happenings of the tipi markets all under Byron’s sweet summer sun. In the evening, from 7pm at the Beach Hotel, the high profile ticketed event kicks off opening up with the big and beautiful voice of Paula Fuga from Hawaii supporting our second local surprise act, and our special headlining guest flown in from the USA, G. Love and Special Sauce!! Along with this we also have avery unique audio visual experience with Jack McCoys’s 25-year anniversary of his grounbreaking films Bunyip Dreaming and The Green Iguana with live music scores by featured musicians and surfers Andrew Kidman, Terepai Richmond, Dave Rastovich and more. Tickets for this event will be very limited and will obviously sell fast!! Sunday is beach day and one of the most popular events of the festival is the freestyle&stoke surf sessions held at the dreamy Wategos beach. With talented surfers and shapers pouring in from all over, the grass and foreshore will be littered with a display of handmade, art-driven and sustainably produced surfcraft, whilst out in the water a showcase of immense creativity and fun will be happening in the diversity of the surf sessions. After this day of sharing waves and community fun it is only good manners that we throw a little party. This evening event will include live music, food and after a hot summer’s day, probably plenty of bevy’s from our major sponsor Stone & Wood! Tickets for this evening event will be very limited and will also go sale from Dec 9th via byronbaysurffestival.com.au
