Hey all you cinema fans and movie goers – you’re going to love what we’ve got in store for the 2017 festival. Spread across the 24-25 of Feb there are four seperate events showcasing some truly remarkable films which will cater for everyone. Whether you love short surf films, inspiring feature films or a glimpse into the lives of female surfers, we’ve got you covered. Read up on everything going on below!
SUNSET CINEMA – “GIVEN”
Held on the Byron foreshore, the Sunset Cinema is our opening night event and serves as a meeting ground for families and film lovers spread amongst picnic blankets and good vibes. This years event is holding the Australian movie premiere of ‘Given’, starring Aamion Goodwin and family. It will be opened with a traditional welcome to country blessing from the Arakwal mob, followed by a solo performance by Hawaiian singer/songwriter Paula Fuga and a short film showing and culminating with the BBSF 2017 selected Feature Film
Come down to the Byron foreshore on Friday Feb 24 for a starting time of 7pm.
The chosen feature film, ‘Given’, is a simple yet powerfully contemplative story of a unique family legacy come full circle. Told through the visceral experience of a 6 yr. old, Given follows legendary surfers Aamion and Daize Goodwin from their island home of Kauai through 15 different countries in the quest for surf and to fulfill a calling handed down through generations. Set in wave after wave of stunningly visual earthscapes, Given blooms into a tender yet stirring exploration of a young boy’s understanding of life through his familial bonds and their reverence for nature. Deeply moving, Given gives us the humbling contrast of a small voice voyaging through a big world as it finds its way home again.

ISLAND EARTH SCREENING
If you’re after more inspiration on Saturday morning, check this one out.
Island Earth is a rich tale of a young indigenous scientist’s struggle for truth between science and tradition as he enters an industry that many feel is threatening his homeland. It shows his complex journey through the corn fields of GMO companies to the loi patches of traditional Hawaiian elders reveals modern truths and ancient values that could save our future. Fundamentally, Island Earth is about a growing movement of people who are fed up with an industrial agricultural system that is reliant upon fossil fuels and chemicals, and follows one of the most important discussions of our time. By sharing Hawaii’s struggle, it aims to inform andinspire people to go beyond the issues and the activism and actually participate in taking back our food supply.

PEAR SHAPED
Spend the rest of your afternoon with Lauren Hill talking all things ladies and watching seriously great content.
Lauren Hill is a passionate environmentalist, travel writer, surf adventurer and life enthusiast. She runs a blog, zine and Instagram named ‘Seakin’which focuses on community, equality and activism within the surfing world. It’s safe to say that Lauren is an all-round great person with a passion and drive to better the world, and we are so excited to have her be a part of the festival.
On Sat 25 she will host the panel about her short film Pear-Shaped; a glimpse into the little absurdities from the everyday realities of being a woman in the water: from rogue tampon strings to the ever looming wardrobe malfunction. It’s an antidote to the hyper-sexualised, out-of-touch representation of our side of surfing, and a tip of the cap to those who shrug off the unique, and sometimes humiliating challenges, and choose to ride and slide anyway.

And wait… there’s more!
Spend your Saturday evening enjoying a special screening of ‘Surfers’ Blood’ by Patrick Trefz which tells the universal story of true individuals that share deep bloodlines connected to the sea. Come and explore his love of surfing by watching him profile those who inspire him. From the old world fishing history of the rugged Basque Coast via oar and surfboard shaper Patxi Oliden, to the modern metropolis of San Francisco and the eccentric computer shapes of Apple fame designer Thomas Meyerhoffer.
