VISSLA’s COSMIC CREEK SINGLE & TWIN FIN COMING TO BYRON BAY
PLUS World Premiere of Jack Coleman’s new film ‘NATURAL HIGH’
Cosmic Creek, the 24-year-old Californian event that celebrates surfing’s transition years of the 1970s and 80s, is coming to Byron Bay next month as part of the Byron Bay Surf Festival.
Participants in Cosmic Creek ride supplied single and twin fins shaped up to 50 years ago by some of the region’s iconic shapers, including Bill Wallace, Gunther Rohn, Dick Van Straalen, Geoff McCoy, Tony Dempsey, Hayden Kenny, and Chris Brock.
The event, which is open to all comers and includes a range of age divisions and an exhibition pro division, is being brought to Byron Bay by surf brand Vissla. The competition will run on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10, and will be immediately followed by an evening of free music at the Rails Hotel.
Surfing will take place at The Wreck.
Cosmic Creek is the brainchild of Californian surf industry veteran Eric Diamond, who established the event to recognise and celebrate the surfboard shaping community in honour of his father Daryl who delivered the Clark Foam surfboard blanks to the US shaping community from the 1960s through to 1980.
The event has run for 24 years in the US from its spiritual home of Salt Creek and this is the first time it has come to Australia.
All surfboards are supplied and the craft ridden in each heat is chosen via a random draw ahead of each heat to ensure no individual benefits from having their own special craft.
Entry is now open on the Byron Bay Surf Festival Website or >HERE< with all competitors provided with insurance and a pack containing products from Vissla and other event sponsors such as Hydro Flask, along with VIP entry to a post-event party featuring surfer-led bands Le Shiv, Takaicardia and headlined by The Terry’s.
As part of the Cosmic Creek event, California-based surf filmmaker Jack Coleman will be hosting the world premiere of his latest film, NATURAL HIGH. The film features Ryan Burch, Derrick Disney, Bryce Young, Steph Gilmore, Kobe Hughes, Leah Dawson, Robin Kegel, Tosh Tudor, Andy Nielblas, Mainei Kinimaka, Alanna Parra, Mananalu Chandler, John Peck and Gavin Beschen.
NATURAL HIGH will be showing on the night of Thursday 8 September at Byron Bay, with tickets available on >HERE<. It will be followed by an evening of live music at the Rails Hotel.
